What Does That Mean?

During the first cycle of IVF we were given a folder.  We were told everything we needed to know was in the folder.  We reviewed the folder, but were left more perplexed than before we looked at the information.  I called our nurse to ask them to define terms that were frequently used and they just used more big words that I didn’t understand.  On my blog I want to start a page for infertility terminology.  What are some of the terms or acronyms that made you ask, what does that mean?

Here are a few to get us started:

ART:  (Assisted Reproductive Technology) Medical procedure or treatment that helps a woman conceive.

Azoospermia: Complete absence of sperm in semen.

Egg Retrieval: A surgical procedure to obtain eggs from follicles in the uterus.

Estradiol:  Hormone produced by the ovaries.

Embryo Transfer: Placing fertilized eggs (or embryos) back into a women’s uterus or fallopian tubes.

FSH:  (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)

Implantation:  When a fertilized egg (or embryo) adhere to the lining in the uterus.

IUI: (Intrauterine Insemination)  Facilitating fertilization by placing sperm inside a women’s uterus.

IVF: (In-Vitro Fertilization)  Eggs are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilized outside the female body, then transferred back to the uterus.

ICSI: (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) Process sometimes used during IVF in which a single sperm is injected into an egg outside of the body.

MESA: (Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration) procedure to obtain sperm from men with a blockage in their reproductive tract.

TESA: (Testicular Sperm Aspiration)  procedure done under local anesthesia to obtain sperm directly from the testicles.

Vitrification:  Process for freezing embryo’s so no intracellular ice forms.  Vitrification allows for a high freeze-thaw rate (95%) that leads to outcomes comparable to fresh embryos.  Learn more about vitrification vs. other methods here: http://www.ivfauthority.com/2009/06/egg-and-embryo-freezing-vitrification.html.
